A general strike as envisioned by the UAW will take cooperation from other unions willing to align their contract expiration dates with April 30, 2028. Although this type of solidarity among unions is a tall order, “there is an actual game plan laid out that could lead to a general strike on May 1, 2028,” said Barry Eidlin, an associate professor of sociology at McGill University in Montreal.

Pro-Israel billionaires urged New York crackdown on Gaza protests: Report

WhatsApp leaks reveal group of business leaders discussed ways to pressure officials to clear pro-Palestine protesters.

A handful of powerful businessmen pushed New York City Mayor Eric Adams to use police to crack down on pro-Palestinian student protesters at Columbia University, donating to the politician and offering to pay for private investigators to help break up the demonstrations, the Washington Post has reported, based on leaked WhatsApp conversations.

The story, published on Thursday, says that several billionaires seeking to influence public perception of Israel’s war in Gaza discussed means of pushing the mayor and the university’s president to end the protests, which were eventually cleared last month amid criticism of the police’s heavy-handed response.

“One member of the WhatsApp chat group told The Post he donated $2,100, the maximum legal limit, to Adams that month,” the story reads.

“Some members also offered to pay for private investigators to assist New York police in handling the protests, the chat log shows — an offer a member of the group reported in the chat that Adams accepted.” The story states that city authorities denied that private investigators were used to help manage the protests.

Rebuild the labor movement through militant class struggle
Without organization, workers are mere raw material for exploitation. Only class-struggle unionism, which starts from the premise that our interests and the bosses’ are diametrically opposed, can reverse decades of decline and put labor back on the offensive.

We oppose all anti-union laws and fight for every worker’s right to strike and join a union. We reject multi-tier contracts, concessions, and give-backs, and call on labor leaders to launch an all-out drive to unionize the unorganized.

We fight for trade union democracy on the basis of one member, one vote. To combat bureaucracy and corruption, all union officials should be elected by the membership with the right of immediate recall, and be paid no more than the average wage of the workers they represent.

Communists built the American labor movement and formed the backbone of industrial unionism—it’s time we returned to our fighting roots! The best way to prepare for an all-out general strike is to successfully organize millions of workers in a wave of industrial strikes, demonstrating the colossal power of the working class in action.

However, trade union organization and struggle are not enough. Workers need a class-independent political expression to coordinate their common struggle against the capitalist class as a whole.

Down with the Democrats and Republicans! Build a communist party!
American workers have no party of our own. The left is nonexistent, and the labor leaders embrace class collaboration and compromise. In this vacuum, the Democratic and Republican Parties have succeeded in dividing and duping millions into voting for them as the “lesser evil.”

Those who argue that these and other institutions of capitalist and imperialist rule can be made to serve two masters are deceiving the workers and leading them into the dead-end of class collaboration and reformism.

Communists stand for uncompromising class independence and reject the false dichotomy of liberalism versus Trumpism, two sides of the same capitalist coin. To combat the distorted polarization of the culture war, we stand for class polarization and the class war.

Raw milk is more dangerous than ever. So why are sales surging?
It has everything to do with Americans’ distrust in government.

Here’s the wild part: According to a recent report from the Associated Press, in the time since these announcements were made, weekly raw milk sales have gone up, not down — an increase of 65 percent compared to the same period last year.

“It defies logic,” says Nicole Martin, a food scientist and the associate director of the Milk Quality Improvement Program at Cornell University. Does the uptick represent increased consumption among people who already drink raw milk or new interest from people now hearing about it for the first time? It’s not entirely clear, but according to a raw milk farm owner quoted in the AP story, “Anything that the FDA tells our customers to do, they do the opposite.”

Pasteurization has been making the world’s milk supply dramatically safer since the late 1800s, and for just as long, a portion of milk drinkers have been rejecting that technology.

Columbia University faculty pass vote of no confidence in president
Professors rebuked the embattled leader over her handling of pro-Palestinian protests.

Arts and Sciences faculty at Columbia University on Thursday passed a vote of no confidence in the institution’s president, Minouche Shafik — a sign of growing dissent over her controversial handling of pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

Out of the 709 professors who voted for the resolution — introduced by the Columbia chapter of the nonprofit American Association of University Professors — 65 percent expressed no confidence in Shafik, while 29 percent voted against it and 6 percent abstained, according to the results shared with POLITICO.

“President Shafik’s violation of the fundamental requirements of academic freedom and shared governance, and her unprecedented assault on students’ rights, warrants unequivocal and emphatic condemnation,” the resolution states.

Though symbolic, the move is designed to send a message to the university’s board of trustees, which is continuing to back her, that trust in the embattled leader has eroded.

“A vote of no confidence is the first step towards rebuilding our community and re-establishing the University’s core values of free speech, the right to peaceful assembly, and shared governance,” the resolution reads.

An estimated 255,000 uninsured New Yorkers between the age 19-65 are excluded from health insurance (such as Medicaid and the Essential Plan) because of their immigration status.

A3020/AS2237A would solve this problem by expanding the Essential Plan for all low-income New Yorkers who meet income requirements (up to 250% of the federal poverty level). This would be done using federal funds which can only be utilized for innovative healthcare expansion through a “pass through” account. There would be no cost to the state of NY and would result in state savings. The state must amend its 1332 waiver in order to expand healthcare coverage to these vulnerable new yorkers.

UAW Files Complaint Against Harvard for Punishing Student Workers in Gaza Protests

In the filing made to the National Labor Relations Board, the UAW accused the university of surveilling employees, and retaliating against them for their workplace-related action, according to Bloomberg. The group also alleged the school denied employees legal representation during their investigative meetings, and changed school policies to target student activists. The complaint asserts that a university’s investments in Israel constitute a workplace issue, and therefore, student workers’ organizing efforts are “protected concerted activity” against their working conditions. This view supported by NLRB’s general counsel, Jennifer Abruzzo. As such, the complaint has the potential to set a new expansive precedent for how universities must approach students protesting Israel.

The Biden administration has informed Congress it intends to transfer more than $1 billion in weapons to Israel, a week after President Joe Biden said he was pausing the shipment of some heavy bombs to the country, a lawmaker familiar with the matter confirmed to USA TODAY on the condition of anonymity.

The Biden administration paused the shipment of 3,500 bombs to Israel over concerns they could be used in a major military operation in Rafah, where more than 1 million refugees have been sheltering.

The latest weapons package includes the potential transfer of $700 million in tank ammunition, $500 million in tactical vehicles and $60 million in mortar rounds, according to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported on the development. The transfer will undergo congressional review before they are approved and sent.

Latest polling showed he was sinking fast by holding back the weapons and all the voters were turning against him. The Democrats were eating him alive. Another reason he may bail out for re election.

Legislators and formerly incarcerated mothers rally for sentencing reform bills

State Sens. Julia Salazar and Jeremy Cooney joined advocates to push for a trio of bills that would reduce excessive prison sentences.

Advocates, impacted individuals and lawmakers gathered in the state Capitol to show support for a package of three bills: the Earned Time Act, Second Look Act,, and Eliminate Mandatory Minimums Act. The Earned Time Act would make it easier for people to earn time off their sentences through good behavior and enrolling in programs like vocational training. The Second Look Act would permit judges to reevaluate excessive sentences and consider imposing new, more lenient ones. And the Eliminate Mandatory Minimums would, as the name suggests, get rid of mandatory minimum sentences, like those for drug offenses.

“We have a very harmful legacy when it comes to sentencing laws in New York,” said state Sen. Julia Salazar, sponsor of the Second Look Act and chair of the Senate Crime, Crime Victims and Correction Committee. “It is extremely important that we pass the Second Look Act so that judges can reconsider sentences that were unjust and not in the interest of justice.” State Sen. Jeremy Cooney, sponsor of the Earned Time Act, also spoke at the Mother’s Day rally, noting that time is running out to pass the package of bills this year. “I am here, asking all of us, to have a renewed sense of urgency,” he said. “Three weeks is not a long time, but it’s doable.”

Raw milk sales spike despite CDC’s warnings of risk associated with bird flu

wow real smart going for darwins awards here

Since March 25, when the bird flu virus was confirmed in U.S. cattle for the first time, weekly sales of raw cow’s milk have ticked up 21% to as much as 65% compared with the same periods a year ago, according to the market research firm NielsenIQ.

That runs counter to advice from the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which calls raw milk one of the “riskiest” foods people can consume.

“Raw milk can be contaminated with harmful germs that can make you very sick,” the CDC says on its website.
As of Monday, at least 42 herds in nine states are known to have cows infected with the virus known as type A H5N1, federal officials said.

The virus has been found in high levels in the raw milk of infected cows.

Learn the lessons from the 2020 and 2022 strikes! Take the struggle out of the hands of the UAW!

https://www.reddit.com/r/UCSantaBarbara/comments/1crkloi/learn_the_lessons_from_the_2020_and_2022_strikes/?rdt=41267& onetap_auto=true&one_tap=true

Academic workers in UAW 4811 are voting Monday-Wednesday this week to authorize a strike against the UC's violent police assault of peaceful anti-genocide protesters. All those who participated in the 2020 and 2022 strikes know from the experience of those struggles that the union has no interest in carrying out a real fight. In those struggles, the UAW bureaucracy used every trick to disorient, discourage, and demobilize workers, to limit the struggle, and to maintain their own privileged positions within the union and the Democratic Party.

Regarding Gaza, the UAW bureaucracy has completely lined up behind the Biden administration and its support for Israel's genocidal war. At the UAW's Community Action Program conference in January, president Shawn Fain enthusiastically endorsed Biden reelection bid, while pro-Palestinian protesters were physically dragged out of the conference.

At this point, any delay in strike action is unacceptable. Neither students nor workers, and certainly not the Palestinians, can wait any longer.

Graduate student workers must mobilize now to countermand this slow-motion sellout. They should organize their own rank-and-file strike vote and form their own strike committees, separate from and uncontrolled by the UAW apparatus, to enforce their democratic will.

Be careful which labor organization represents you. Some are in the game for the dues money but lack the heart and soul of its members

40711 continuing this post. The UAW is selling out these strikers.

The strike authorization vote places the rank and file in direct conflict with the UAW leadership, which fully endorsed President Joe Biden’s 2024 candidacy despite his genocidal and warmongering policies. After an over week-long delay in calling the vote, Local 4811 finally announced the vote but rendered a possible strike contingent on whether “circumstances justify.”

Moreover, the union unilaterally calls for the infamous “standup strikes” and reserves the right to restrict them to selected campuses only, for the purpose of limiting as much as possible the impact and effectiveness of strike action. The “standup strike” pro-corporate tactic inflicted a massive defeat on autoworkers last fall. Instead of calling the entire membership on strike, UAW president and Biden’s biggest fan Shawn Fain left workers on the job at the most profitable plants, betraying workers’ readiness to fight.

In addition to limiting the action to an “Unfair Labor Practice” claim against the UC system and “standup strikes,” the UAW is also undercutting workers’ action by limiting the duration of the strike to less than two months. In a ballot shared with the World Socialist Web Site by a member of Local 4811, the UAW wrote, “The strike will end on all campuses no later than June 30th, 2024.”

Despite the attempt by the union to smother and curtail strike action, the authorization vote is a highly political expression of workers and students who are overwhelmingly opposed to war, the genocide in Gaza and those primarily responsible for it, namely the state of Israel and the Biden administration. Anger and opposition to the criminal onslaught of Palestinians and imperialist war is mounting in country after country...

FAQ ON STRIKES AND UAW STRIKE ASSISTANCE

https://uaw.org/strike-faq/

important information for all strikers.

A Weekly strike assistance is $500 per week ($100 per day, Mon-Fri). Strike assistance pay is available after the first day of the strike. A bonus check is paid the week prior to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

The UAW Strike and Defense Fund covers certain benefits such as medical and prescription drugs. Benefits not covered include: dental, vision, hearing and sick and accident.

These benefits are either paid directly by the Fund according to the company’s current plan or by having the Strike and Defense Fund make COBRA payments to the company plan.

The bad part of this is if an employee does not have his or her probationary period met and it not a union member, they do not get any strike benefits, even though they are working towards being a member.

Strikes are not fun, been through 2 of them.

ULP strikes are fully legal in the United States, however, striking for a political cause is banned under the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947. This means that in the United States, union members have far fewer rights to express collective political will than in other countries. Other practices banned under Taft-Hartley include jurisdictional strikes, wildcat strikes (strikes undertaken without the approval of union leadership), solidarity strikes, secondary boycotts, secondary and mass picketing, closed shops, and donations to federal political campaigns.

Although UAW 4811 are calling for a ULP strike, fully legal under Taft-Hartley, their collective action begins to challenge the longstanding political neutrality of the US labor movement, which has been fostered by a hostile, anti-union system of legislation. Their bold actions as student workers, supporting students who are standing in solidarity with Gaza, echo some other actions taken by organized labor within the student movement for Palestine.

At Columbia University, UAW 2710, the Student Workers of Columbia, staged multiple pickets around Columbia’s Gaza Solidarity Encampment while it still stood, and has called for “full amnesty for all students, staff, and faculty facing disciplinary action related to pro-Palestine protest and speech.” The local has even stood completely with the demands of student protesters for Columbia’s divestment from Israel.

On Monday, 48,000 University of California academic workers and members of United Auto Workers Local 4811 began electronically casting their ballots to approve a strike authorization. The vote is scheduled to last through Wednesday.

The UAW was forced to call the vote as a result of massive anger among grad students and academic workers to an attack by armed Zionist counter-protesters—abetted by the police, UC administration and UAW leadership—on the UCLA Gaza Solidarity encampment two weeks ago. While police did nothing for hours as the encampment was attacked by right-wing thugs, the following night, police returned to conduct mass arrests of peaceful students and workers.

Abolition and Social Work: Possibilities, Paradoxes, and the Practice of Community Care

Join editors Mimi Kim, Cameron Rasmussen, and Durrell Washington and contributors Ramona Beltran and Stéphanie Wahab for a conversation about their new book, Abolition and Social Work: Possibilities, Paradoxes, and the Practice of Community Care.

Abolition and Social Work explores the debates, conundrums, and promising practices around abolition and social work in academia and within impacted communities. Within social work—a profession that has been intimately tied to and often complicit in the building and sustaining of the carceral state—abolitionist thinking, movement-building, and radical praxis are shifting the field. Critical scholarship and organizing have helped to name and examine the realities of carceral social work as a form of “soft policing.” For radical social work, abolition moves beyond critique to the politics of possibility.

“This book breaks the humanitarian illusion of social work and raises the real questions about if and how we can infiltrate its systems to redistribute, disrupt, and support liberation.” —Dean Spade

“This critical collection invites everyone in a ‘caring profession’ into a critical assessment of their collusion with the carceral state, points to the promise of an abolitionist approach to care work, and challenges all of us to reach beyond policing in new forms to radically reimagine how we care for each other.” —Andrea J. Ritchie

40686 Regarding your concern about Israel, land-grant universities are not directly involved in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, some universities may engage in research collaborations or partnerships with institutions worldwide, including those in Israel. These connections are often complex and multifaceted, involving various academic disciplines, cultural exchanges, and international relations. It’s essential to approach this topic with nuance and consider the broader context of academic cooperation and geopolitical dynamics.

Amid Hamas's governance of the Gaza Strip, the terrorist organization had also been surveilling and building files on civilians, journalists, and individuals who questioned the government. Hamas leaders had been governing the people in a tyrannical manner that did not allow civilians to stray off the course of their rule. It was revealed that security officials would trail journalists and suspicious behavior. Hamas reported on Gaza residents through a specialized unit, the General Security Service, which functioned as a part of the government and made use of informants throughout Gaza.

it stabilizes them which they need to be in order to function so they are able to do all of that like in switzerland for example they give heroin to people addicted to heroin other countries do this also but they are much more functional and can hold down jobs cause they are not out running around doing who knows what worried about getting the next fix the swiss did have a heroin epidemic in the 90s they are much smarter then americans they treated it as a medical issue not a criminal one like usa did and guess what we seen they have much better results then usa does

If the object of that program is to ween said subjects off drugs and alcohol then contribute to society as a tax paying person, then im all for it. but if its not about rehabilitation then that would be like giving an arsonist keys to the gasoline supply with free matches

While such programs are rare in the United States, they are more common in other countries, including Canada, Portugal and the U.K. And experts say such programs provide stability and support to homeless people who cycle from the streets to emergency rooms and jail.

In Canada, where managed alcohol programs have operated for more than a decade, more than 40 programs are currently in place, according to the University of Victoria’s Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research.

A 2022 study of Canada’s managed alcohol programs found that participation reduced the risk of death and resulted in fewer hospital stays for individuals with unstable housing and severe alcohol addiction.

“It’s a better way to spend our money than someone being in a jail or hospital where they are not getting care for their health needs,” said Dr. Bernie Pauly, a leading medical researcher who has pioneered much of Canada’s programs.

@40635

its a medical program no different then any other medical treatment

it helps keep people off the streets and out of emergency rooms, jails — or the morgue.

San Francisco set up a “managed alcohol program” four years ago as a way to care for vulnerable homeless people who drank excessive amounts of alcohol and were among the city’s highest users of emergency services.

Such programs don’t focus on sobriety, experts say, but rather on improving participants’ overall health while decreasing hospital stays and calls to police.

Shannon Smith-Bernardin, a professor at the UCSF School of Nursing who helped create the managed alcohol programs in San Francisco and Alameda County, explained that the goal is to stabilize participants’ alcohol use “so they’re not binge drinking or stopping drinking and having seizures and then … start figuring out what’s next.”

The program also offers participants medications and therapy to reduce alcohol cravings.

San Francisco public health officials found that the city saved $1.7 million over six months from the managed alcohol program in reduced calls to emergency services, including emergency room visits and other hospital stays. In the six months after clients entered the managed alcohol program, public health officials said visits to the city’s sobering center dropped 92%, emergency room visits dropped more than 70%, and EMS calls and hospital visits were both cut in half.

Previously, the city reported that just five residents who struggled with alcohol use disorder had cost more than $4 million in ambulance transports over a five-year period, with as many as 2,000 ambulance transports over that time.

The San Francisco Fire Department said in a statement that the managed alcohol program has “has proven to be an incredibly impactful intervention” at reducing emergency service use for a “small but highly vulnerable population.”

The city’s public health department is working to get some of the program costs reimbursed through MediCal, according to a spokesperson.

In addition to offering medication and therapy, the program provides cultural outings and life skills classes, according to the public health department’s presentation.

The U.N. stated they made a mistake in the reportable Palestine deaths. They were listening to what Hama was reporting Not 35,000 civilian deaths . Hamas doesn't separate fighters from civilians, they clump them altogether. The Palestinian Health Ministry ( run by Hamas) inflated the death toll . The UN now says the death toll is 7,703 which includes 1863 women,3195 children the balance the resistance fighters ,
