On Dec. 7, for instance, a plastic scraper was discovered protruding from the wing fold of one of the squadron's jets, after the jet had flown, the memo noted. The 5.5-inch scraper was discovered during a post-flight inspection on the jet and fell to the ground.
All five jets had fuel contaminated with Krytox, a high-temperature lubricating grease, the memo said, and three jets also had metal shavings in their fuel. The jets had to be defueled and refueled two or three times to get the fuel quality up to an acceptable level, with the jets that had metal shavings requiring an extra defueling cycle, the memo added.
Fisher, the VMFA-311 commander, wrote that this meant the squadron had to dispose of more than 169,000 pounds of contaminated fuel.
The seals and segments on multiple jets were not installed correctly, the memo said, and needed to be removed and reorganized.
And multiple parts in the jets - including power and thermal management system controllers, electronic units, and an electric-hydrostatic actuator on a jet's trailing edge flap - failed, forcing the squadron to remove and replace them, the memo added.
One jet's left main gear brake assembly also failed, another fighter's panoramic cockpit display failed and yet another jet's backup oxygen system bottle was leaking, the memo stated. All components also needed to be removed and replaced.

“I’m not saying there aren’t sincere passions about Gaza, especially among people from the region, but social justice warriors? For a lot of them, it seems like it’s more about the warrior-ing than about whatever the cause is,” he added.
“If it makes you feel good to cosplay as revolutionaries, knock yourself out, burn yourself out. Just don’t drag Gaza into it,” the “Religulous” star said, before suggesting protesters ask themselves, “Why do I care so much about this particular cause?”
“North Korea starves its people. China puts them in concentration camps. Myanmar brutalizes the Rohingya. .. There is some truth to the popular protest slogan: ‘They tried to bury us, but they didn’t know we were seeds’
As a sociologist of social movements, I study how movements select and shift tactics to elicit a response from their opponents. Over the next few weeks, we will see dozens of other university encampments spring up because activists have found a tactic that gets the administration’s attention at a critical time: during finals and commencement.
It’s hypocritical for universities to be bastions of knowledge and guardians of free inquiry, who then will not disclose certain relationships with donors; including corporations and governments.
Today’s student protesters struggled to find a tactic that could escalate their grievances to the upper echelons of the administration, where students – and even most staff and faculty – often have no insight. Critically, students picked a critical time as administrators want the grounds to look as pristine as possible with commencement coming up. While all tactics eventually expire as the opposition learns to counter the moves of the protesters, student protesters have the upper hand now. If students can find a way to build momentum throughout the summer months, it’s possible this issue will be a major factor in November’s election.
The aftermath at Columbia University should be instructive for other universities facing similar protests, the repression and suspension of students leads to more sustained protest and broader participation. More students join in, if only just to witness. By suspending so many students, they now have very little to keep them from organizing and drawing attention to the encampments popping up across the US. Activist tactics are mimicked, like memes: when they hit, they resonate, but the effect can be short-lived unless it gets remixed.
